Volunteer Requirements

Our volunteers join us for any number of reasons; to fulfill the Sunnah of visiting the sick,  for the sake of God, to uplift a community member at times of need, to gain job skills, explore career opportunities in the Health Care Industry or to keep busy.

Adult Volunteer Program: The adult program is for individuals 18 years and over. A minimum commitment is to volunteer for at least one 2-hour shift per week for six months.  The requirements are outlined below.

Junior Volunteer Program: This program is designed for volunteers that are at least 14 years of age that give back to their community, summer experience, career exploration, etc. The program is highly competitive and sought after.

Requirements: 

  1. All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation. You will be informed of your orientation date and time.
  2. A confirmation email will be sent to you within 7 business days of receiving your volunteer application.
  3. The email will include required forms.  Complete the forms and bring them with you to orientation.
  4. Sign up for a group interview on the day of your scheduled orientation date.
  5. Complete online training modules (HealthStream).
  6. Complete a criminal background check (adults only).
  7. Complete the hospital’s health clearance process (information provided at the group interview).
  8. Submit two letters of reference (turn in at any time).
  9. Complete training provided by Muslim chaplain
  10. Some hospitals require that you shadow other chaplains or volunteers prior to seeing patients on your own.

Compensation

  • Volunteer positions are not paid.
  • Muslim Spiritual Care Services will reimburse volunteers for mileage driven to visit patients.
  • Volunteers do not carry employee status (your participation will not result in any status as an employee of any of the participating hospitals, nor will you be entitled to any form of remuneration for your services).

Time Commitment

  • The minimum commitment is 3 – 4 hours per week for 6 months, on a regularly scheduled basis. Some volunteer programs require a 1-year time commitment.
  • All assignments to volunteer positions can be terminated at any time, by either party, with or without notice and with or without cause.  No volunteer assignment is guaranteed for any specific period of time.
